Most of best Laser Radial European sailors (Belgium Evi Van Acker wasn’t part of competition) where racing this week in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, for the European Laser Radial Women’s Championship 2016. Once again was Dutch sailor Marit Bouwmeester NED who won a major event, becoming one of stronger candidates for Gold in Rio 2016.

A perfect start and nice final race helped Marit Bouwmeester NED (1-1-1-2-2-
3-10- 26-4-12-13-4) to win this main European event, just 2 points ahead of Swedish Josefin Olsson SWE, and 14 units less than Tuula Tenkanen FIN, finally in third.
Gintare Scheidt LTU and Alison Young GBR finished 4th and 5th. Chinese Lijia Xu CHN –current Olympic Gold medalist– in 6th.
Paige Railey USA (14th overall) was the winner of last race and have been confirmed as US representative in Rio. It will be the second Olympic Games for her so congrats Paige!
The last day of the championship has offered sailors amazing conditions, with 8-12 knots and a typical long wave from the Atlantic.
The event was organized by the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, the European Laser Class Association (Eurilca) and the Royal Spanish Sailing Association in Gran Canaria.
