Seeking Toronto 2015, we’re introducing now Brenda Bowskill, the local Laser Radial sailor representing Canada at the 2015 Pan American games.
Meet Brenda Bowskill CAN and her sailing history
Brenda Bowskill was born in Toronto, Canada. She began sailing at the age of 6 at the Queen City Yacht Club on the Toronto Islands. She lived aboard her parents boat during the summers and this was where her sailing passion began. Brenda took all of her junior club sailing levels from Opti, White Sail, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. She completed her levels at several yacht clubs including Whitby Yacht Club, Frenchman’s Bay Yacht Club, and now is currently a member of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club.
Brenda Bowskill represented Canada at the Youth World Championships held in Istanbul, Turkey in 2010. This was Brenda’s first World Championships, and the big event that sparked her dreams of eventually representing Canada at the Olympic Games. She continued on her sailing path to qualify for the Canadian National Sailing team at the age of 18. Brenda has moved up the ranks on the National Team from development level to currently the senior level.
Brenda Bowskill is studying nursing at the Ryerson University located in Toronto, Canada. She has made her two life goals of graduating University and going to the Olympics very achievable as her home, school, and training location are all within 20 minutes of each other. Brenda will continue being competitive within the international fleet and will push hard leading up to the 2016 Olympic Trials.
Brenda Bowskill recently qualified for the sole position in the Laser Radial class to represent Canada at the 2015 Pan American Games. The games are to be held in her home city and home club this summer. Brenda reflects back on the event: “The qualifying regatta for the Pan Am’s was at World Cup Miami on Key Biscayne. This venue is known for its tricky and challenging conditions but I was prepared skillfully, physically, and mentally for a challenging week. I really credit my success at this event to the hard work that I have put in with the help of all the staff at the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, including Sheldon my trainer and Judy my psychologist. My coach Chris Cook and I, who I began working with at a young age at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, have really found our stride as a team. We are extremely happy to have qualified for the Pan Am games as this will be our first real ‘games’ experience together. We are more excited to continue with our success and we are determined to become one of the best in the world. I am not on this journey alone – I have many people supporting me behind the scenes that is invaluable and fundamental to my future in the sport.”
Brenda Bowskill is beyond thrilled to represent Canada at the Pan American games in her home city and home club!
