2016 Laser Worlds are coming in Mexico
In words of the organization, travel to Puerto Vallarta for the Laser World Championships couldn’t be easier. International Airport (PVR) is served by direct flights from a wide range of countries, including USA (20 cities), Canada (14 cities), and England (2 cities), as well as every other international location via connections in Mexico City or Guadalajara. Being a popular tourist destination, this international airport is set up for large volumes of international arrivals.
Vallarta Yacht Club is approximately 10 miles north of downtown Puerto Vallarta, one of the most interesting and entertaining tourist venues in Mexico. Public transportation and local taxis run between Nuevo Vallarta and Puerto Vallarta all day and late into the evening.
If you wish to drive, you will joining thousands of tourists and residents who arrive in the area by road every year. It takes about two long days of driving, mostly on toll roads. Travel on Mexico roads at night is not recommended due to poor lighting and the occasional “tope” (speed bump) that are difficult to see at night.

The 2016 Laser World Championships will take place on the Pacific Coast of Mexico on the waters of the large Banderas Bay. The bay is open to the west and is approximately 15 miles wide by 30 miles deep. The popular tourist areas of Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit grace the nearly 30 miles of pristine beachline. One of the most important attributes of Banderas Bay is the mild climate with extremely reliable wind and sea conditions.
Sailing will be less than one kilometer off the beaches and will be based at the Vallarta Yacht Club (VYC) located only 14 minutes north of the Puerto Vallarta International airport. The course is a relatively short 20 minute sail from the club’s launch area.
Founded in 2002, Vallarta Yacht Club is a private, independent yacht club operating out of custom-built facilities leased from Paradise Village Resort. VYC’s expertise in race management and Banderas Bay’s superb sailing conditions brought the club the 2007 J24 World Championships, the 2007 Optimist North American Championships, and more recently the sailing events for the 2011 Pan American Games and the 2014 Optimist North American Championships.
Puerto Vallarta’s best sailing conditions
In words of Dan Green, VYC Commodore, the months of April and May were chosen as they offer the best of Vallarta’s eight months of exceptionally reliable sailing conditions. This sunny weather with average temperatures in the low to mid 80s F.(29 C.) is also great for all kinds of outdoor activities whether boating, golfing or even horseback riding along the 100 miles of Bay coastline, or RVing in the cooler mountains. There is no need to rent a car as nearly everything is available within walking, bicycling or free shuttle service.
All of you are encouraged to come early or stay after the intense competition in the warm steady breeze in warm water leading to fair and fun beach town lifestyle.
